How to Jump Start Your Car Safely: A Step-by-Step Guide

Local Mobile Battery Rescue

Stuck with a flat battery? If you've got jumper leads and a kind neighbour, here's how to get going safely. Or if you prefer, skip straight to calling us for mobile battery replacement.

What You'll Need

  • A set of jumper leads (keep them in your boot)
  • A working vehicle with a charged battery
  • Safety glasses (optional but smart)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Position the Cars

Park the working car close enough for the leads to reach, but don't let the cars touch. Turn off both engines and remove the keys.

2. Connect the Red (Positive) Leads

Connect one red clamp to the positive terminal (+) of the dead battery. Connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery.

3. Connect the Black (Negative) Leads

Connect one black clamp to the negative terminal (-) of the good battery. Connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car's engine block — NOT the negative terminal.

4. Start the Working Car

Let it run for a few minutes to transfer charge to the dead battery.

5. Start the Dead Car

Try starting your car. If it doesn't work after a few attempts, the battery may be too far gone and needs replacement.

6. Disconnect in Reverse Order

Remove the black clamps first, then the red ones. Let your car run for at least 30 minutes to recharge.

When Jump Starting Won't Work

If your battery is more than 4 years old or has been completely drained multiple times, jump starting might only be a temporary fix. A failing battery needs replacement. Learn more in our troubleshooting guide.
