Car Battery Types Explained: Which One Does Your Vehicle Need?
Not all batteries are created equal. Here's a plain-English guide to the different types and which one suits your car.
Standard Lead-Acid (Flooded) Batteries
The traditional battery most cars use. Reliable, affordable, and widely available. Perfect for most everyday vehicles.
Best for: Standard cars, older vehicles, budget-conscious buyers
Price range: $190–$240 installed
Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB)
A step up from standard batteries. Better at handling repeated charge/discharge cycles. Sometimes used in entry-level start-stop vehicles.
Best for: Vehicles with basic start-stop systems, drivers who do lots of short trips
Price range: $200–$280 installed
AGM Batteries (Absorbent Glass Mat)
Premium batteries where the acid is absorbed into fibreglass mats. Sealed, spill-proof, and excellent at handling high electrical loads.
Best for: European cars, vehicles with start-stop systems, cars with lots of electronics, 4WDs with accessories
Price range: $280–$400 installed
Deep Cycle Batteries
Designed to be discharged and recharged repeatedly. Not for starting cars — these are for powering accessories.
Best for: Camping setups, boats, caravans, dual-battery 4WD systems
How to Know Which You Need
Generally, you should replace like-for-like. If your car came with an AGM, stick with AGM. Downgrading can cause problems.
Check your owner's manual or look at your current battery. Still unsure? We'll identify exactly what you need when we test your battery.
Can You Upgrade?
You can often upgrade to a better battery (e.g., standard to EFB, or EFB to AGM) if you want longer life or better performance. But you can't downgrade without risking damage to your electrical system.
